Indian visa is an official document issued by the Indian Consulate to an individual intending to travel to India for tourist, business, employment, student, journalist, urgent business or other purposes.

Popular Indian Visas

Indian Business visa

A Business Visa is given those who are doing business in India such as making sales or establishing contacts on behalf of a company outside of India. Business visas may be valid for three months to one year or more with single or multiple entries. However, the period of stay in India (for each visit) under this category is limited to six months only. Please note that the validity of the visa begins from the date of issue by the High Commission of India and not from the date of travel on your application form.

Indian Tourist Visa

A tourist visa can only be granted to a foreigner who does not have a residence or occupation in India and whose sole objective of visiting India is recreation, sightseeing, casual visit to meet friends and relatives, etc. No other activity is permissible on a tourist visa. A tourist visa may be issued normally for three months to six months with single, double or multiple entries and is non-extendable and non-convertible. The duration of the visa is at the sole discretion of the Issuing Authority. All visa fees once paid are non-refundable irrespective of the outcome of the visa application and duration granted Please note that the validity of the visa begins from the date of issue by the High Commission of India and not from the date of travel on your application form.

Indian Employment Visa

An Employment Visa is granted to those who are an employee of an Indian company / or those who intend to do honorary work (without salary) with Registered NGOs in India. The Embassy/Consulate may grant Employment visa valid for a limited validity irrespective of the duration of the contract. Further extension up to 5 years could be obtained from MHA / FRRO in the concerned state in India.  High Commission of India and its respective Consulates in Birmingham and Edinburgh have introduced mandatory biometrics enrolment programme for specific visa categories with effect from 19 August 2016.

Indian Student Visa

Student visas are given to Bonafide students to pursue regular studies at recognized institutions in India. The visa is single, double or triple entry. Valid for the period of study as approved by the educational institution in India.



Please note that the validity of the visa begins from the date of issue by the High Commission of India and not from the date of travel on your application form.

Indian Journalist Visa

All foreign journalists, regardless of the purpose of their visit, should apply for a “J” (journalist) visa, for up to three months' stay in India. “Journalists” for this purpose would include a professional journalist, columnist, cartoonist,  editor, correspondents of media organizations, photographer, film producer or director (other than that of commercial films), a representative of a radio and/or television organization, travel writer/travel promotion photographer etc or any professional journalist/owner working for an association or a company engaged in the production or broadcast of audio visual news or current affairs programmes through the print, electronic or any other electronic form. In other words, any professional who is directly or indirectly engaged in the process of creation, management or dissemination of contents for a media organization shall be treated as Journalists.

Indian Business Visa Requirements for United Kingdom Citizen:

Passport

The passport must:

  • Be valid for at least 180 days beyond exit date.
  • Have at least two blank visa pages.

Photograph

Two photographs (two) must:

  • Be taken within the last three months.
  • Be taken against white background.
  • Be 50mm x 50 mm in size.

Indian Visa Application Form

This Application form must:

  • Be completed online
  • Be completed with the selection "London" as the place of submission.
  • Have section G completed in full.
  • Have no handwritten corrections/modifications.
  • Bear a signature that matches the applicant's passport.
  • Be submitted to the Embassy within 15 calendar days of completion.

Letter of invitation

This letter must:

  • Be on company letterhead paper.
  • Addressed to The High Commission of India, India House, Aldwych, London WC2B 4NA
  • Include the name of the applicant.
  • Passport details (number, date of birth, issue date and expiry date).
  • State the purpose of journey.
  • For the same day service, it is recommended to explain the required urgency.
  • If applying for a 1-year visa, the letter must also say why a 6 month visa would not be suitable.
  • Bear the stamp of the inviting company.
  • Bear the signature of the inviting party.

Letter of UK employer

This letter must:

  • Be addressed to: The Indian High Commission, India House, Aldwych, London, WC2B 4NA
  • Be on company letterhead paper with the name and address.
  • Include the applicant's full name as stated in their passport.
  • Include the applicant's position in company
  • Include the passport number of the applicant.
  • Include the date of issue of the passport.
  • Include the date of expiry of the passport.
  • Specify the purpose of journey.
  • Specify the exact nature of the business being conducted.
  • Include the name of the organisation(s) to be visited.
  • Include an acceptance of financial responsibility for the applicant.
  • Be signed and dated by the applicant's supervisor or the company's HR department.

Important Notes

  • We need to receive your complete and correct documents until 3 p.m. on the day before we apply on your behalf.
  • Applicants with dual nationality must apply with the passport from their country of origin together with the copy of information page of the UK or other passport.
  • People of Indian origin are needed to surrender their Indian passport to the High Commission of India before submitting their visa applications.
  • A Surrender Certificate will be issued as soon as process is finished.   A copy of the certificate is also required for submission.
  • For Pakistan Origin extra documentation may be required.
  • Indian visa Centre applies a surcharge of 1.98% - 2.05% on all credit card payments, in addition to the combined consulate and visa centre fees outlined above.
  • Applying for Employment visa are mandatorily required to give Biometrics.
  • If you are applying with non-UK or no EU member state passport, you must have long term or indefinite UK visa stamp in your passport.
  • Visas cannot be applied for more than three months in advance of the entry date.
